Christmas
in Kazakstan
Christmas
in Kazakstan is not celebrated
as a national holiday. During
the last 75 years of communist
rule the people of Kazakstan
were prohibited from speaking
about their religious beliefs.
Currently, the population
is almost evenly divided into
Muslims and Russian Orthodox
followers.
Slowly,
Christianity is being reintroduced
with the help of a few churches.
This is being done through
the organization of Christmas
concerts where Christmas songs
are sung. The Orthodox Church
provides public worship services.
On Christmas Eve, in the evening,
people of all ages go to visit
their friends at their homes.
They sing Christmas songs and
wish each other well. One of
these songs is "Silent
Night."
In
secular homes, families gather
together to share Christmas
pies and bottles of wine or
vodka. They make toasts, sing
songs, and dance.
