Christmas
in Nigeria
Nigerians
have special traditions with
which to celebrate Christmas
time. One such tradition is
that of decorating their homes
(compounds) and churches with
both woven and unwoven palm
fronds. In Nigerian tradition,
palm fronds signify peace.
This is the peace that Christ’s
birth brings.
Nigeria
is a country rich in cultural
plays. There are different
plays to be performed at different
occasions. In celebrating
Christmas, the EKON play is
used to entertain both young
and old. The drama team dances
from compound to compound
with a 'baby' in hand signifying
the new born baby Jesus, God’s
gift to mankind. Admirers
accept the baby doll and present
gifts to the drama participants
before handing the doll back
over.
